Kiwi men consume more than twice as much coffee daily as women, according to the findings of a survey of coffee machines.

The survey by Canstar Blue revealed that 40% of men, and 17% of women surveyed drink more than five cups of coffee a day, which is two more than the 3 cups or less a day, recommended by health experts. Christchurch residents drink the most coffee with 35% enjoying five cups or more a day. Despite enjoying some of the best cafes in the country, only 13% of Wellingtonians indulge in, five cups or more a day.

Derek Bonnar CANSTAR CANNEX - New Zealand National Manager said the survey also found that kiwis' rated De'Longhi coffee machines top for overall customer satisfaction. Coffee machines included in the ratings were those manufactured by: De'Longhi, Sunbeam and Breville.

"De'Longhi received the maximum five stars in six of the eight categories we rated, including: overall satisfaction, reliability and performance, ease of use, maintenance and servicing, design and the ability to make good coffee. Sunbeam gained five stars for price, maintenance and servicing, and after sales service and warranty.

"Almost a fifth of those surveyed (18%) confessed to spending more than $1000 on their coffee machine. Coffee drinkers in the capital are the most likely to have invested in a top of the range coffee machine at 28%, closely followed by Aucklanders at 22%.

"Whether a coffee is Fair Trade also influences our buying decisions. Forty percent of those surveyed stated that it is important to them to only purchase Fair Trade coffee. Wellington residents were the most committed to purchasing Fair Trade coffee at 53%, with 46% of Aucklanders, and 29% of Christchurch residents agreeing it affected which coffee they purchased," says Derek.

Amongst those surveyed the most common gripes about coffee machines include:

Cleaning

Making a cup of coffee is too complicated

Size of machine, and the bench space it takes up

The amount of time it takes to make a coffee

Design problems, such as the height of the spouts and the size of the water reservoir

Taking too long to heat up.

Canstar Blue commissions Colmar Brunton Australia to survey 2,500 New Zealand consumers every few months to measure their satisfaction across a range of products and services. The outcomes reported are the results from coffee machine users within the survey group - in this case, 299 people. To qualify, the customer has to have purchased a coffee machine in the last three years. Brands must receive at least 30 responses to be included.

Canstar Blue is the new division of financial research and ratings company, CANSTAR CANNEX which has been operating in New Zealand for nearly a decade.

Canstar Blue provides New Zealanders with the latest customer satisfaction ratings on products and services free of charge via the website www.canstarblueco.nz.

"Consumers will undoubtedly feel more confident about a purchase if hundreds of other Kiwis rate it highly," said Derek.
